Known as Barunguba to the local Yuin Aboriginal people, Montague Island is a spectacular 81-hectare nature reserve that has been protecting unique wildlife for over 70 years. First spotted by Captain James Cook in 1770, this granite island holds deep cultural significance as a sacred site and traditional hunting ground.
The island features in Aboriginal mythology as the eldest son of Gulaga (Mount Dromedary), with archaeological sites indicating thousands of years of Aboriginal connection to this special place. The Walbunja people traditionally paddled to the island in canoes to collect sea-bird eggs and hunt marine life.
Today, Montague Island stands as one of Australia's greatest conservation success stories, home to the world's longest continuous seabird monitoring program and boasting vertebrate pest-free status achieved through extensive habitat restoration.
